Social Justice and Climate Change

As a member of the Woburn Place Collaborative, the Carnegie UK Trust commissioned Steven Burkeman to:

- explore the degree of urgency which trusts and foundations attach to working on the social justice implications of climate change;

- identify the kinds of interventions to which foundations might be willing to contribute; and

- identify the degree to which they might be willing to collaborate.

New philanthropy report published

Just Change by Diana Leat

The Woburn Place Collaborative has recently published 'Just Change: Strategies for increasing philanthropic impact'. The report aims to encourage discussion of how philanthropy can contribute to achieving longer term systemic change with impact beyond immediate grantees, and inspire practice. The report illustrates a number of case studies which highlight some recurring themes in how foundations work and what they need to look for, and fund, in grant recipient partners if they want to contribute to achievement of wider, longer term impact.

A report to be published later this year, based on research conducted by Carnegie UK Trust, will highlight the roles of foundations in contributing to lasting, positive change for public benefit. Diana Leat, author of the report, said: 'We underestimate the importance of charitable foundations when we focus only on their money. This report will illustrate the huge potential, and varied roles. of foundations in contributing to change with impact way beyond their immediate grantees'.

First National Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy Moves Forward

The Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy research is a joint initiative funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, Office of the Third Sector, Carnegie UK Trust and the Scottish Executive. The Centre’s total budget over 5 years will be £2.2 million.

The Centre will take the form of a hub and spokes. The hub (the lead organisation) will work in close collaboration with expert groups (the spokes). The hub and spokes together will constitute the Centre.

ESRC has now issued a call for proposals for the hub and the spokes. The call is for full proposals and the closing date for applications is August 14th 2007. It is hoped that contract negotiations and announcement of awards will be completed by the end of 2007.

Research centre consultation workshops

Research Centre Consultation Workshops

Carnegie UK Trust is running a series of consultation workshops in January 2007

Worshops will take place around the four jurisdictions of the UK, following the recent announcement that the UK's first Research Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy is to be set up. The Research Centre is supported by a group of funders including the Office of the Third Sector, ESRC, Scottish Executive, Northern Rock Foundation and the Carnegie UK Trust.
