The Potential of Foundations in Achieving Sustainable Social Change

The Potential of Foundations in Achieving Sustainable Social Change: A Collection of Case Studies

Background

This study will provide a collection of case studies illustrating the potential role of foundations and other grantmakers in achieving sustainable social change, addressing issues of social justice and environmental sustainability. The study, funded by a group of funders belonging to the Woburn Place Collaborative, will be directed by Diana Leat, Research and Development Director at Carnegie UK Trust. The assumption underlying the study is that some grantmakers are deterred from engaging in ‘social change’ philanthropy because they find the terminology daunting, do not understand what such work looks like in practice and/or are unsure what is involved/how to do it.

Aim of the Study

  • Increased engagement and awareness of philanthropy for a more socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
  • Increased understanding and discussion of the potential role of philanthropy in achieving structural, systemic and sustainable social change.
  • Reduction of the obstacles to engagement created by language and lack of awareness of methods of change.

The Case Studies

The case studies will be deliberately designed to focus on inspiring examples of what can be achieved in this field (although attention will also be paid to lessons learned about what did not work). Shorter case studies derived from already published sources will be selected and written up in a common format. Further examples for more detailed, original study will be selected in consultation with the study advisory group.

Product

The case studies, with commentary and discussion in the light of the existing practice literature, will provide the basis for a publication illustrating the potential of grantmakers in achieving sustainable social change, as well as identifying issues on which further learning is necessary.
